How to Increase C Drive Capacity (Windows 10, 8, 7)

2 min read

When buying a new laptop, we often find the hard disk inside has been divided into two partitions, namely drive C and drive D. Usually drive C, which is the location for installing the operating system and programs, is smaller than drive D where data is stored.

The division of hard disk partitions like that is very common, because logically the C drive is only used as a place to install the OS and programs so it doesn’t need to be too big.

But the problem is, the size given is sometimes too small. There is even a friend of mine who bought a new laptop with only 46 GB of C drive size, while the total hard disk on the laptop is 500 GB. So stingy.

Maybe the distributor forgot that currently the average application size is getting bigger because they have to keep up with the development of the graphical display and UI. Not to mention those who like to play games or download pirated movie YouTube, it’s guaranteed that the size of a small C drive will be full in no time!

To answer this concern, I will share how to increase the capacity of the C drive partition easily and safely. Although it seems trivial but many friends are still afraid to do it. Fear of being wrong and then the data will be lost. Therefore, I will show you how to do it step by step until it is finished.

How to increase the capacity of the C . drive

1. Install the partition manager application (partition manager)

To increase the size of the C drive partition in Windows 10, 8, and 7, we need the help of a partition manager application. The application I recommend is AOMEI Partition Assistant.

I have reviewed this application in a previous post and is the best free partition application that we can get today. Please download and install the application first, the download link can be found here:

Just download and install it on your laptop or PC then follow the next steps.

2. Open the AOMEI Partition Assistant app

Once installed, run the application. Wait until the application finishes scanning all the partitions on our hard disk.

3. Pay attention to the position of the hard disk partition and determine which part can be moved to drive C

In this tutorial I will show two partitions named Drive C and Drive D.

Between these two partitions there is no free hard disk space (unallocated) so to increase the size of Drive C, the Drive D partition must be shifted forward.

4. Slide drive D forward so that there is unallocated space that can be used to add drive C

Because we will increase the capacity of the Drive C partition, there must be unallocated space at the base of Drive D. So the first step we have to do is move the Drive D partition to the front.

The trick is to click once on Drive D and then select the Resize/Move Partition menu.

After that a window will appear to resize and move partitions on Drive D.

Drag the size constraint forward to move the Drive D partition forward, while reducing its size so that a new unallocated space will be created at the bottom of the partition.

See the following image for easier understanding:

If you have clicked OK. Then click the Apply button in the upper left corner.

Then the application will carry out the process of moving and resizing the partition. Maybe the process can take a few minutes depending on the capacity of the hard disk that we have. The bigger it is, the longer it will take.

5. Resize drive C to increase capacity

After the process is complete, we will see that there is an unallocated space in front of Drive C. This empty space is what we will use to increase the capacity of the Drive C partition.

To increase the size of the C Drive partition, we must combine it with the unallocated space.

Next we will increase the size of Drive C > drag the size limiter until it sticks to the end > Click OK > Apply

Wait until the process is complete.

After the process is complete, we will find that the size of Drive C has increased by the amount of unallocated space we created earlier. Up here we have succeeded in increasing the size of our C Drive. Easy isn’t it?

There is nothing dangerous about messing with hard disk partitions as long as we know what we are doing. So friends, don’t be afraid anymore, if you have any questions, you can post them in the comments column below this post.
